So, you’ve been injured outside the state of New Jersey, and you need a lawyer. Where do you start?
Maybe you do what almost everyone does— Google, of course— and type “lawyer + New York” or “injury lawyer in Pennsylvania” or “best lawyer in Florida” or something like that into the Google search engine, and— well, you have ton of options. Poke around a few attorney websites, find someone who looks like they know what they’re doing, and next thing you know you’ve got the best personal injury lawyer outside of New Jersey, right?
Maybe. But probably not.
Sure, you could simply use a search engine (or even the telephone book, if you can find one of those around…). But you should consider that the best way to find a non-New Jersey personal injury lawyer might be by first talking to a New Jersey injury lawyer, especially if you or a family member or friend already has a good relationship with one! Why?
Your New Jersey lawyer knows lawyers. Chances are they’ve worked with lawyers in other states. They’ve studied with them, gone to conferences with them, are on listservs with them, written articles with them… and your lawyer, who knows you, will be able to point you in the right direction of a lawyer who’s tailored to your personality, and your needs. If the New Jersey lawyer does not have a direct contact in another state, let them do the googling and make the introductory call. Within a minute or two on the phone, your New Jersey lawyer will now whether or not to recommend the other lawyer.
Why use this referral instead of the ‘I’m feeling lucky’ option on Google?
∙ Expertise. You want the right out-of-state lawyer for your injury. Someone with the expertise and a track record of handling cases like yours.
∙ Personality. If you have already worked with a New Jersey injury lawyer that lawyer already knows you. She or he can refer you to an out-of-state lawyer they feel will work well with you— kind of like how often how you get on with the friends of your friends.
∙ Reputation. Because your New Jersey lawyer is putting their reputation on the line when they refer you to an out-of-state attorney, they’re only going to refer you to an out-of-state lawyer with a reputation they trust. If the New Jersey lawyer does not make a good referral, the New Jersey lawyer could also be on the hook for mistakes made by there out of state lawyer. They have skin in the game.
The right attorney, the right background, the right firm— these things matter, especially in an area you’re not familiar with.
